Hue Citadel was built under the reign of King Gia Long and King Minh Mang from the summer in 1805 to 1832. The scheme Hue citadel lasted 2 years from 1803 to 1804. Compare with Phu Xuan citadel, Hue capital citadel was expanded larger. Base on the feng shui and Ying and Yang…the architect designed the citadel facing the South.
The citadel has three circles of ramparts, namely from outside to inside: Kinh Thanh (capital citadel), Hoang Thanh (royal citadel) and Tu Cam Thanh (forbidden citadel). The Ngu Binh Mountain in the South like a front screening elevation. Con Hen and Da Vien on the Perfume River are chosen as geomancy condition “dragon on the left, tiger on the right” to protect the capital city.

Hue Citadel was built in 1805 under the reign of King Gia Long and accomplished in 1832 under the reign of King Minh Mang. Under Nguyen dynasty, kings had built ramparts, palaces and constructional works of royal. Until now, it still has original wit nearly 140 small and large constructions. The citadel has square shape, 6 meters height 21 meters thick and 10 entrances. Besides, there has 24 bastions were established with the aim of defensive rival.
Citadel Around
Hoang Thanh-Royal citadel is situated in the central citadel which established highest offices of Vietnam’s feudalism and sanctums honoring of King. The Citadel has a square form with more than 600 meters and 4 meters thick. Going to the Imperial city, you can access four entrances. Noon Gate is the entrance that used for the King. Royal Palace included more 100 beautiful constructions.

Forbidden Citadel:
Tu Cam Thanh (Forbidden citadel) is situated inside the Imperial city. It was constructed early in the reign of Gia Long in 1804 with 3.72 meter height 0.72 meter thick. Forbidden citadel consists of 50 architectural constructions and 7 entrances. In addition, Hue is also famous for royal tombs and temples of Nguyen dynasty. 7 tombs are not only a wonderful art but also symbols for Hue architecture.
